NO. 5/8 OF MY FAVORITE IMAGES FROM 2021
A picture of an art installation. Can that also be art itself? Here's what the background information provided by the municipality of Utrecht had to say about the piece:
Riots, arson, looting, fighting. In 2011, protesting British youths left a trail of destruction through the cities. Why remains unclear, but on social media a traditional African saying was quoted: ‘If the young are not initiated into the village, they will burn it down just to feel its warmth.’ In other words: if you exclude the young, they will burn down the city and warm themselves by the fire. With this text as a beacon on the facade of Hoog Catharijne, the British Nathan Coley makes us think.
Nathan Coley makes installations and drawings as well as photos and light sculptures. They are all about how people use buildings. What influence does the architectural space where we live, work or shop have on our social behavior? Coley investigates how he can influence the perception of our environment as an artist, for example with a text.
The artwork was realized as part of the Call of the Mall event in the station area, 2013.
